Littlescreamers win 2007 AIAA Design/Build/Fly competition

webassets/dbf07010.jpg
I just came back from the annual AIAA Design/Build/fly competition in Tuscon AZ, where we (MIT) took first place, powered by Littlescreamers Parkjet motors. Design/Build/Fly is a student design competition where teams from universities around the world spend the year designing a aircraft to meet a set of mission specs set out by the AIAA. The missions vary from year to year but usually have some heavy lift element, and a ground mission focused on rapid reconfiguration of the aircraft, and a constraint that the aircraft must fit (assembled or unassembled) in a 4'x2'x1.5' box.

Hello,

I just wanted to share my success with my Little Screamer motor.  This past winter I did some research and found your little motors to be the most innovative and leading edge electric motors on the market but was skeptical as to whether this motor would be enough power for my Ikarus F3A Shockflier.

I took the chance and bought one of these little wonders without having seen one in action, except for the video on your website.  After weighing the motor, complete with wires and mounting hardware I was very impressed, just as advertised and WAY lighter than "other" motors people typically use on this plane.

I mounted the Little Screamer on my F3A Shockflier and immediately loved the mounting pedistal mounting system.  I went to balance the F3A with the 3 cell Li-Poly batter in the recommended location at the forward-most position the slot would allow...still very tail-heavy, even for 3D!

I had to move the 3 cell battery up next to the motor, the furthest forward I could possibly mount it on the plane.  It balanced just aft of the recommended range for the CG, so I was pretty sure I was right in the range for great 3D flight.  On the first flight the plane was flying inverted and upright hands off...perfect balance.

The performance of this motor had me increasing the size of the propeller I normally would use on this small foam acrobat, the 'Screamer was ripping the prop through the air on uplines and asking for more! At 7.4 ounces this F3A ShockFlier rockets out of a hover and flies for 20 minutes on one battery pack, a true winning combination for indoors or out.

Thank you for providing a lightweight, powerful motor at a great price!  I always buy the best so I don't have to upgrade, and I am glad I took the chance with your product.

Plane: Ikarus F3A Shockflier
Motor: Little Screamers De Novo Outrunner (3 cell configuration)
All up weight: 7.4 oz with 3 cell battery
Battery:  Thunder Power 780mah 3 cell Li-Poly w/micro-Deans connectors
ESC:  Castle Creations PH 10 Brushless
Performance: Phenomenal!

Gratefully,

Albert Hibpshman.

Bret Becker's collection of Little Screamer powered micro speed planes.

Bret began developing the Micro Stinger design in 2004. These tiny composite models have 24" wingspans and are a blast to fly.  At first they were capable of 80 mph using brushless inrunner motors.  With the help of Bob Vincent they push the Micro Stinger's top speed to 141.5 mph using a re-wound Littlescreamer Jetscream motor spinning a 4.2x4.75 prop on a 3s 1320.  "For extreme performance no other motor compares!" The Gordo is a purpose built speed plane designed by Bret Becker for the fastest foamie speed contest on RCGroups.com. This depron model was designed around the power system that pushed the Micro Stinger to 141 mph.  This model has a 20" wingspan and is released in midair by an Eflite airliner.  We are glad to say this plane crushed the competition with a speed run of 139 mph.  Its impressive performance and original design resulted in it being featured in July 2009 issue of FlyRC. More information about this project and its power system can be found (HERE) & (Video)
